the Cathedral is the other famous dive site on Lanzarote.
It features a beautiful cavern dive with the ceiling being covered by
thousands of colourful knobby corals, sponges, jewel anemones and
tube worms. A torch is a must to be fully able to enjoy the stunning
colours and to explore the cavern right to the back where in corners
black corals can be found.
Entering from the beach (Playa Chica) we have a short surface swim
out to the end of the bay. Descending down, we follow the sand
slope down to the top of the reef which will lead us round to The
Cathedral. It is possible that George, our local grouper, will
accompany you on part of your dive at this point so keep your eyes
peeled for him! Be sure to explore the reef wall for all types of hidden
life as we swim along it before reaching The Cathedral. Before
entering The Cathedral we shall stop at the rocks outside and have a
sneak peak at our resident moray eel, and as we enter take a look at
the wall to your left hand side where you will spot a small branch of
rare black coral, which is normally found at 60+ metres!
In the quieter times of the year the cave is shelter for large groupers
and on the sandy bottom sleeping angel sharks are at home.
On our return we shall cross our the sand bed known as the ‘bubble
garden’, where air bubbles out of the sand are turning the blue
Atlantic waters into a fairytale garden of sparkling bubbles! Swimming
over the bed of garden eels, we make our way back to the entrance
of Playa Chica Bay, where the fish life in the bay will keep us
entertained during our safety stop.
This dive is suitable for Advanced Open Water divers and above, with
the maximum depth being 30 metres |
