Wreckdive HMS Coriolanus A warship of the British Royal Navy (Shakespeare class). Official data of the royal war museum in London: Sweeper with 554 BRT. Length: 46 m (150 ft). Width: 8,5 m (28 ft). Armament: 1 cannon (12 pdr) 3 MK (20 mm). Launching: 2 September 1940. Sunk: 5 May 1945 Like all ships of the Shakespeare class the name of the HMS Coriolanus was designated after the leading actor Gnej Marcije Koriolan (lat. Gnaeus Marcius Coriolanus) from the piece of the author. Coriolanus received its name after the siege of the city Coriolij (493 before Christ). There is information, according to which the sweeper was used also for the espionage. The ship participated in the following operations of the Allierten of naval forces: Operation TORCH, landing in North Africa, 1942 Operation HUSKY, landing in Sicilies, January 1945. Rumors mean that it was used into the northern Adria also for hearing Yugoslav radio traffic. The captain was Lt. Nr. Hunt. On 5 May 1945 the ship ran around approx. 14,10 o€clock on a naval mine and sank within few minutes. The wreck is on the following coordinates: N 45°19€09€€ / O 13°25€25€€ / approx. 6 sm before the coast of Istra. It is upright on sea-bottom in a dept of 20 - 28 m.
